Check to make sure it is safe to cross. Crossing a road may take a few seconds – the wider it is the longer it takes to cross.
Never run across a road. You may trip and fall in the path of an approaching vehicle!
Use pedestrian crossings or controlled intersections to cross where at all possible. Remember to make sure vehicles have seen you and are stopping before you walk across!
Make eye contact with drivers when you want to cross the road. This is a proven way to make them aware of your presence.
If there is no footpath always walk on the right hand side of the road facing approaching traffic.
Only walk on the road when you have NO other choice.
Always wear bright clothing. You need to wear bright clothes that will stand out for drivers to see you. Dark or dull clothes that blends in with the surroundings may cause drivers not to see you.
The Road is No Playground. Drivers don’t always expect pedestrians to be about and may be focused on finding an address or something else may cause them not to focus on pedestrians. When you play on the road you may also forget to look for out for traffic and therefore the situation may become very unsafe.
