Mature Road Users

There are many physical and psychological challenges for the mature driver.

It’s not to say that you must give up driving...

Is it time to consider taking a driving course?

For many older drivers there is a fear from losing their independence, when they come to a stage where they’re not able to handle driving as they’re used to.

But there are many drivers who have overcome the issues by doing a safe with age course.

The most important factor here is the ability to identify the potential risk and take the necessarily steps to overcome it.

Here are a few pointers to guide you to make an informed decision. Nobody wants to be responsible for a crash where somebody else got hurt or killed.

If in doubt:

  1. Talk to others who are in a similar situation as you are
  2. Listen to the people who know you best and care about you most
  3. Discuss your driving with your doctor.

Mobility scooter- and power chair user tips

  • Mobility scooters and power chairs are pedestrian aids
  • Follow the road rules for pedestrians
  • Make yourself visible just like a pedestrian would
  • Go slow (6 km/h or slower or low setting) when riding on a footpath or in shops
  • Ride as close to the edge of the footpath and road as possible
  • In cases where there is no footpath to ride on or its obstructed, ride on the road facing oncoming traffic. Only ride there if you have NO OTHER OPTION.
  • Be aware of vehicles coming out of driveways
