Child Restraints

The Law states that children under 5 years must be properly restrained.

It must be in an approved child restraint (this does not include an adult safety belt ).

There is an infringement notice of $150 that can be issued for every child not in a child restraint or if that restraint is not properly fitted.

Please note the safest place in the car for your children is always the back seat!

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Child Restraint Guide

Babies - under 6 months (birth to 9kg)

  • Infant seat must always be rear-facing
  • Never place a rear-facing seat in the front passenger seat, especially if it has front air bags
  • Seat to be held in vehicle with a seat belt
  • Use a locking clip on a seat belt buckle if it is not firmly in place (diagonal safety belt)
  • Children must be fitted snugly into seat with harness on firmly. Make sure shoulder straps are lower than baby to stop them sliding

Child Seat - 6 months to 4 years (9 to 18 kg)

  • It is recommended that the seat remains rear facing until child is 12 months old
  • It is fitted in with a lap or lap/diagonal belt
  • Must be fitted with a top tether strap which is bolted onto the car
  • Safest place to have a child seat is in the middle of the back seat - however, if car seat doesn't fit there due to contours of the seat then place child restraint behind the front passenger seat in the rear
  • Use a locking clip on a seat belt buckle if it is not firmly in place (diagonal safety belt)
  • Children must be fitted snugly into seat with harness on firmly. Make sure shoulder straps are higher than the infant as can cause shoulder injuries in a crash

Booster Seat - 3 years to 9 years (14 to 26 kg) or 140 cm

  • Minimum weight of a child is 14 kg
  • Make sure you use a harness as well as a lap belt for a booster seat - Never use only a lap belt

Buckle them in and give their life a chance
