Travelling to School

Being roadsmart for school - best choices for our children.

Congestion at school gates

Children watch what parents do! The biggest problem we experience at schools, is congestion. It seem that many parents feel their child should be dropped off as close to the gate as possible. In order for that to happen, they stop on yellow lines, double-park or block entrances.

This sort of behaviour actually contributes to the unsafe feeling many children and parents complain about.

Alternative ways to get your child to school

There are a few options available.

  • Walking/scooter,
  • Biking
  • School bus
  • Walking school bus

Perception of danger

This is a common argument from parents that they feel it’s unsafe for their child to go to school in other than the family car. Like the comments that were made about congestion at the school gate, it is in most cases a false perception. Children who walk to school in a group or the more cyclists there are on the road the safer it becomes. The risk many people refer to is caused by parents who don’t want their child to walk a few hundred metres to school. Where will this child learn independence if mom or dad always walk them to the classroom?

Police don’t talk about ‘stranger danger’ anymore because statistics show that in most cases children have been abused by another family member or by a family friend.
